Tràpani – Week 21
Transfer 8, Mission Week 51

Ei buondi!!

Hope that everyone is doing well. Sorry that my emails didn’t make it through last Monday. I resent them to everyone so hopefully they all got there and everyone was able to read them. President Waddoups did a good job of scaring the crap out of me too. I had just had my interview and Anziano Spencer and I were finishing up a sick night of finding in Palermo and I got a call from him and he says, “Well Elder you’re in trouble.” I was like oh crap, “What did I do?” He replies it, “It wasn’t what you did, it’s what you didn’t do.” My reply, “Uhhh…” Thoughts were running through my head. Did I miss someone to give a pass along card to or something like that?  He then explained that I didn’t email my family and everything which was really weird since I spent like 3 hours in the church emailing. We got it all figured out and I sent them off the next day while we were waiting for Zone Conference to start.

Last week went really well though! Monday night we had a really awesome lesson with this family and it went super well. We were talking about the plan of salvation and they really enjoyed it. We could feel the spirit super strong at the end as we bore our testimonies on the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that has been restored through Joseph Smith. Super awesome lesson and we are going back over there tonight to watch The Restoration film with them and then have dinner. We are excited and really hope that it goes well.

Tuesday we did a scambio with the Palermo B Anziani in our district, so Anziano Jensen and I came here while Anziano Spencer and Anziano Brandon were in Palermo. It went really well and was good to get to know Anziano Jensen some more because we didn’t get many chances to talk one on one in the MTC. We were able to have a pretty successful scambio together and I definitely took a lot of good lessons away from it. We were able to randomly meet so many people I knew on the street that I never really see at all. It was really weird, but we turned out to have a lot of really good conversations.  We finished up the scambio visiting some members and having lunch with them. We headed back to Palermo Wednesday so we could get there for interviews. Anziano Spencer and I teamed up again and went out for a night of finding that went really well and we were able to talk to some really awesome people. Hopefully the numbers will go places for the Anziani there. We stayed the night with the Anziani at the Palermo 1 house with all 4 of the anziani plus the assistants as well. It was fun, as always, to get to talk to everyone before heading to bed.

Zone conference was a lot of fun and we were able to really learn a lot from all our leaders. President Waddoups did two really good addestramentos. One on becoming a consecrated missionary, based around Tad R. Callister’s Becominng a Consecrated Missionary talk. It was super good and a really good reminder for me to make sure that I am putting my all on the altar of sacrifice for the Lord during my service over here. He then focused on the Book of Mormon and we have the challenge right now to read it in three months which is going really well. I am excited that we are all really trying to focus on Preach My Gospel and the Book of Mormon right now. The assistants, Anziano Flynn and Anziano Taranto (Toronto), gave an amazing addestramento about focusing on Preach My Gospel. Sorella Waddoups also had a really awesome activity that she did where we were able to share our thoughts on two missionaries, then the Book of Mormon, and finally the Savior. It was really awesome. Super fun zone conference for sure.

We did a lot of planning Friday night and then coordination meeting with our branch mission leader. Saturday we were able to have 4 lessons which was really awesome and they all went really well. The one with our new investigator from English course went really well and we were able to read Alma 32 together and it was awesome. We really look forward to seeing where he goes and how he progresses. He came to church too!! It was so awesome. I really love him a lot and really hope it all works out with him.

We went to Segesta again today, which was really fun,  and we were able to go with Anziano Palazzo, Anziano Trejo, two other members from Palermo 1 and then an investigator of theirs. It was super fun.

Something that I really enjoyed from my study this week was from this morning was 2 Nephi 9:39.

39 O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.

I really like the last sentence. It is so true that as we are spiritually minded it truly helps us make the best decisions in life and helps us avoid falling into temptation from the adversary. I really liked that a lot to just be spiritually minded which will help us get to where we want to go, our enteral home with our Heavenly Father.

I love you all very much and hope that you all have an amazing week and that you enjoy life in all ways possible. Talk to you soon!

Vi voglio bene,

Anziano Garrett

Tràpani – Week 17
Transfer 7, Mission Week 47

Ciao!

I hope that everyone had a great week! This week we were able to have a few more lessons, but we are still working really hard to be able to find some more work right now. It was a great week though!

Monday we were able to go bowling with a friend of ours which went super well and it was a lot of fun. We were able to play pool too, which I haven’t played in so long so that was a blast. He is super cool and we were able to have a super good conversation with him afterwards and invited him to take the lessons. He said yes which was so awesome to us and we were super pumped up! We then got ready and did finding after that and it went super well! We had to make the decision to go left or right out of the apartment and we went left and ended up right away meeting someone that was in a hurry to the postoffice. We were doing the sondaggio on the scriptures, and he gave a quick response that didn’t show at first that he had much interest, but he was just in a hurry. He stuck around though and we talked for while and were able to get his number and an appointment with him which was super cool! We then kept going in finding and we ended up meeting that less active we had met by the stadium just two weeks prior in the exact same spot. It was super awesome and he asked for our number so it was super sick to be able to see those miracles that were happening that night. It is really amazing the things that Heavenly Father allows us to be a part of. We then finished off the night with a family home evening with a member family. We were able to have two lessons this week that went really well with one of our investigators. He is really intelligent and a super nice guy. He is a lot of fun to talk to, but we unfortunately can’t see him right now because he just expressed to us that he isn’t really ready to commit. Hopefully down the road the Anziani will be able to meet with him again and he will be ready then. [Read more…]

Tràpani – Week 11
Transfer 7, Mission Week 41

Ciao Tutti!

I forgot to say last week that my zone conference was yesterday so we had to get P-Day switched to today. Well I hope that everyone had an awesome week! We had a nice crazy week. Last Monday we were able to play basketball with some ragazzi [boys] which went pretty well. I still stink as usual, but hey the ball never hit me in the face at all.

Tuesday we were unable to grab a bus to Palermo for DDM because it was a festa [holiday] so we had to stay in Tràpani. There weren’t many people out that day at all. We had a good pranzo [lunch] with our ward mission leader and his wife which went really well. We had 3 people show up to English course and they were all advanced so it was great to be able to have a nice time with them and share our testimonies with a smaller group of people. They are all really awesome and definitely have really good friendships with them.

Wednesday had a fair amount of appointments with people set up. Only one of them fell through and we were able to get to know a member family a lot better which was really nice. We headed out for Palermo that night and then we had to wake up at 4:30 to get to the station in Palermo in time for Anziano Bourne to catch his bus to Bari at 6:15. It was Anziano Bourne, Anziano LaPray and I that headed there together. Anziano Trejo and Anziano Vrska went to drop Anziano Borough off at the airport. We texted Anziano Trejo around 6:00 and asked if there was any faster way to get to the station. He called and Anziano LaPray, in an anxious tone, explained that we just woke up. We were just cracking up thinking of Anziano Trejo’s face. It was a fun little joke. Everything went well though. Everyone made their departures on time.

Anziano Trejo, Anziano Vrska, and I were in a trio for the rest of the day. We had two lessons in the morning after studies and then went to eat at a new convert’s house who is the Italian Stan Lee. He is super funny. We had lunch over there and then headed back to the apartment before heading to a less active’s house. We shared a really good message with him that he received very well and it was awesome to see that we all three had different examples, but they all were able to be applied back to the main message. Anziano Trejo had told us about this guy’s movie collection and it is huge. I was nerding out of course for the 5 minutes he showed us. He just has everything you could imagine. He even has a Back to The Future hover board and that hat Marty wears in the second one. It was insane.

Anziano Spencer got in just fine a little after 7:00 and then we headed to Tràpani and got settled all at home. [Read more…]

Tràpani – Week 8
Transfer 6, Mission Week 38

Ciao tutti!

I hope that everyone had an amazing week! So this week was pretty different and a little wackier than the past. Tuesday we were able to do some good finding in the morning. We have been doing a survey that has been really helping us find success in getting numbers this past week. We have a lot of potential investigators  that we are going to start buckling down to get ahold of for lessons. I am really excited for the fact that we have been seeing a lot of success with it.

We were able to stay for English course that night and then headed to Palermo afterwards in order to be there in the morning for Specialized Training. It was  really awesome. The Sister Training Leader, Sorella Hansen, did a really good addestramento (training or something like that) on faith. It was really good talking about how faith is a power that really helps us move and as we apply faith in all we do we will see the miracles that will so often come with missionary work as we do all we can to make them happen with that faith. The Zone Leaders (love them) Anziano Kennedy and Anziano Trejo gave excellent discussion on unity within the a companionship so that we are able to better counsel with the lord and invite a stronger spirit with us. It was really nice and something that I was really happy to hear and can look to how we can do our best to have this between us and the Lord. We then had an interesting activity with Sorella Waddoups that taught about temptation and how hard Satan works with investigators to try to get them to stop meeting with us, not believe it, etc..  It was really a cool activity and just taught well about the competing voices that are investigators face but the spirt works by a still small voice. This is something that will help us for sure. President Waddoups gave an excellent addestramento on revelation.

We then had a good day and a half back in Tràpani and then Friday morning we went into scambio. I was able to go to Palermo with Anziano Kennedy. He is in his last transfer and will be going home shortly. He is so awesome and it was great to be able to learn so much from him. We had really good finding and were able to find success with that. We then had a really nice new convert lesson about Jesus Christ that went super duper well and we could feel the spirit as we talked about our Savior. Then to finish up the night there was an organized activity to watch Meet the Mormons in Italian for anybody that wanted to come. It went really well and was a really good thing to be able to show everybody that came. [Read more…]

Transfer 6, Mission Week 37

Ciao!

I hope that everyone had an amazing week and that you are all doing well! I am low on time so I apologize ahead of time.

We had a good week. We had a nice family home evening last week and it was really funny because during dinner a member is on a strict diet right now and he was sneaking food left and right. It was pretty darn funny and never seen someone eat a meatball that fast at all. This coming week we have specialized training and then a scambio later in the week with stake conference as well. I will be in Palermo Wednesday and then from Friday-Monday. So I will be there for awhile. Should be a nice time for sure though. I always love getting to learn from our zone leaders too. They are so awesome and glad that we have them in our district to get to know them better. We have sick [missionary-speak for awesome] English Course students that we have really strong relationships with. They are all so awesome. I love them. We really hope that we will be able to transition them more into the gospel. They are all so amazing and would love to be able to meet with them all.

This week we were able to see some of our investigators and had good lessons with them and members. We have one that we finally got to meet with for the second time that has been reading the Book of Mormon and retaining it really well. It is really amazing to see the progress out of them. We did a lot of finding this week and are really looking to be able to meet the people that we talked with again to share the Book of Mormon with them. We met some really amazing people and are looking forward to being able to meet with them and share our message with them. We just know how much it can bless their lives as they listen and choose to accept the invitations that we give them. Everybody can know for themselves that the things we share are true and we can’t force it on them. Even though it is so hard sometimes to see people choose not to listen and do the things we ask so they may know for themselves.

I have been reading a lot lately about the Restoration of the Gospel and trying to become more knowledgeable as well as strengthening my testimony of this great and wonderful last dispensation. I read this Ensign article entitled When Do The Angels Come? from April 1992 Ensign. I loved this story from it so much.

I suppose that Brother Williams made the same discovery as did the Saints in the Martin and Willie handcart companies, which were trapped by heavy, early snows on their way across the plains. In a conference address, Elder James E. Faust shared the feeling of one company member:

“‘Not one of that company ever apostatized or left the Church, because everyone of us came through with the absolute knowledge that God lives, for we became acquainted with him in our extremities.

“‘I have pulled my handcart when I was so weak and weary from illness and lack of food that I could hardly put one foot ahead of the other. I have gone on [to some point I thought I could never reach, only to feel that] the cart began pushing me. I have looked back many times to see who was pushing my cart, but my eyes saw no one. I knew then that the angels of God were there.” (Ensign, May 1979, p. 53.)

It is such a amazing story and so wonderful to know that the ministering of angels is still here and even though we can’t see them sometimes we can be blessed with these same wonderful amazing miracles. I love this scripture from D&C 84.

88 And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

It so amazing to know that we have so much help in our lives. We have so much support in our lives as we submit ourselves to our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. I am so thankful for all that Christ has given us. I love my Savior and know that he lives. And because he lives we will all live again, and he suffered for our sins. Through his atoning sacrifice we may be cleansed and washed away from the guilt that sin brings. I love you all and hope that you all have a wonderful week!

Love,

Anziano Garrett

Tràpani – Week 3
Transfer 5, Mission Week 33

Ciao tutti!

So last week we had some good lessons with a couple of our investigators. One is super awesome and he has such a big desire to follow God’s will and really wants to do what is right. He is super amazing and it is always a pleasure to get to talk to him and he has been coming to church for a while now. I really like getting to see him and meet with him.

We did some finding last week and switched up with what kind of style of finding. We had a good time doing one where we had the painting of Christ ordaining the Twelve Apostles and it was fun to do that and we look forward to trying it out with some other paintings.

We had Zone Conference last Wednesday and it was really nice. We had some great success finding in Palermo and then stayed the night there and had zone conference the next day. It was really an awesome time and I loved being able to hear from the assistants Anziano Pingree and Anziano Borden, President Waddoups, and Sorella Waddoups. It was really enjoyable and I learned a lot of what I can work on to become a better missionary. There is always something we can work on, but it was really nice to hear from our leaders and now we jus have to do our best to take away what we learned and apply it into our work and lives.

I don’t have too much else to report on right now. Really looking forward to this week and looking forward to everything that we have lined up and planned out.

So this week I picked my new scripture to ponderize. I chose 3 Nephi 13:34, which can also be referenced as Matthew 6:34 or D&C 84:84 (without the last sentence):

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient is the day unto the evil thereof.

I really like this scripture because it helps remind me to just live today. Not saying it isn’t important to prepare or think about the past, but sometimes if we do that too much or have the “I will be happy when…” mentality it can be dangerous. I just want to be sure to live to make the most of my day. I have always liked the quote from Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.”

I love you all and hope that you have an amazing week! Talk to you all soon!

Transfer 4, Mission Week 29

Ciao!

I hope that everyone is doing well and you guys all had an excellent week.

This week we don’t have a ton to report on. We had a family home evening last Monday night and we invited one of our investigators and a less active we have been working with. They both came, which was super cool, but then before we got started our investigator had to leave to go talk to a guy about work. We called him to set up another appointment but the next day it fell through during study and we haven’t been able to get a hold of him since which worries me a little. I just hope that everything is ok with him.

We got to go see a different less active that we have been working with since I have been here and I always enjoy going to see him and he really appreciates us coming over and visiting with him.

In preparation for General Conference we watched On The Lords Errand, the documentary on the life of President Thomas S. Monson. It was really good and he really enjoyed it and I really love our Prophet. He is truly a disciple of Christ. I have read a lot of talks by him recently and I think of all the stories he has and how many lives that the Lord has touched through him. He responds to those promptings with loyalty and he truly is amazing. I am looking forward to hearing from the Prophet, the apostles, and the other leaders of the church this conference. I am looking forward to the guidance and counsel they offer and give.

Wednesday Anziano Rasband got sick again and we aren’t sure how so we have been at home a lot this week. We made it out enough for English course Thursday, specialized training Friday, and then a church activity Saturday. The specialized training (a zone conference without interviews) was really good and I really loved all the counsel we received from our leaders. It was really good and I felt encouraged by it. A lot of it was on fear and we were able to watch a talk that President Uchtdorf gave to the new mission presidents not too long ago and it was excellent. I was really glad we were able to receive this counsel and I am trying to make sure that I don’t fear anything in this work. This past conference Elder David A. Bednar taught that fear is the opposite of faith and gave this counsel.

“We can be blessed to conquer our fears and strengthen our faith as we follow the Lord’s instruction: “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not” (D&C 6:36).

Godly fear is loving and trusting in Him. As we fear God more completely, we love Him more perfectly. And “perfect love casteth out all fear” (Moroni 8:16). I promise the bright light of godly fear will chase away the dark shadows of mortal fears (see D&C 50:25) as we look to the Savior, build upon Him as our foundation, and press forward on His covenant path with consecrated commitment.”

I really liked this talk a lot and would challenge you guys to read it. Here’s a link to the talk.  I think that we all are afraid of some things, but I learned that we really don’t have to be at all.  With the Lord’s help we will be able to fear not. [Read more…]

Transfer 3, Mission Week 20

Ciao tutti!

So this week was a little weird, or it seemed like it was to me. We had a really great week though. We are still trying to find some new investigators. It’s looking up and I am really excited about this coming week. We have a lot of good plans and it should be an awesome week. Last Wednesday we had a zone blitz the night before Zone Conference and we had the zone do English Course finding so we can see an influx in our course and get some new students. It was a good use of a blitz and we had the missionaries at the Metro stops in our area.

We also had Zone Conference last week and that was really good to hear some things that we can apply to our work to improve as missionaries and I am really excited to try some of the new stuff out. It was really nice and a good spiritual conference. We had some plans this weeks and they fell through, but we are just going to keep on going.

We had an amazing lesson with a new investigator last week, and he is really awesome. I am super excited to continue to work with him. He said something that really struck me. He said he prays everyday and he believes that God listens and he said, “I pray for my brother, my mother, and my family. Then I pray for what I need.” It struck me that he was so selfless to put others in his thoughts before he put himself and I thought that was really cool. So this week in my study I am in the Alma chapters and I had read in Alma 46 about the title of liberty and it really stuck out to me. These are Alma 46:12-14

12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it–In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children–and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.

13 And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land–

14 For thus were all the true believers of Christ, who belonged to the church of God, called by those who did not belong to the church.

It really impresses me how they stood fast for what they believe and know to be true. They didn’t shy away from it at all and they professed what they believe and were willing to lay their lives for it. They then took that title and hoisted it all over the land. [Read more…]

Ciao tutti!

I hope everyone had a great week! It’s been nice and really hot here.  I really wouldn’t mind the heat too much if I could wear shorts and didn’t have a collar choking me, but I can’t lie it is pretty hot here.  It’s nice though!

Ok first things first.  TRANSFER CALL.  So we had transfer calls last Saturday on the 4th of July and we got our call at the beginning of companionship study.  So the big news is I am…. Staying!  I am staying in Rome 1 with Anziano Rasband and surprisingly Sorelle Nagliati, Cano, Kennedy, and Harmon are all staying too!  We are the only district in the entire mission that doesn’t have a single change!  I thought that was pretty sweet.  The Sorelle here in Rome 1 are really hard workers.  They get work done that is for sure.  They have awesome work going on right now and have some really cool investigators.  So yeah we will all be here for another whole transfer.

I am looking forward to this next transfer and I really want to keep working hard to do all I can do to help those the Lord has prepared.  This work can’t be done alone.  We have so much help and I am constantly seeing miracles and blessings that are always coming our way.  We see miracles that are made up of mini miracles and it just leads to things that are so rewarding and so cool to witness and experience.  I know that when we do all we can to live righteous lives and do all we can to follow Christ and obey God’s commandments He will bless us.  No sacrifice goes unnoticed.  He works on His own timetable and in His own way, but He will always follow through.  He blesses us with way more than we even put in sometimes.  I know that this is true for all of us.

We are still working to try to find some new investigators and we are really working to press forward and continue to find people to teach.  We only got to meet with a couple of people this week.  We are hoping to meet with some new people we have found and talked to earlier this week.  I am really excited to talk to some of them.  I have a super good feeling about some of these new people. Ciao tutti!

So this week went really well and was a lot of fun.  I hope that everyone else had a great weekend that you are all enjoying life.  Summer is here, no doubt, and I  hope that everyone will make the most of their time off school and enjoy the summer.

Last Monday on our p-day we didn’t really do much, but just kind of walked around and I saw some things that I hadn’t seen yet but it was fun all the same.  We then had a lesson that night with a new convert family that was super fun.  We shared a lesson on the importance of the Book of Mormon and they said that they would try to have us over for family home evening and get a referral for us.  Super awesome!  Their little girl is super cute and super funny, even though I don’t always know what she is saying, due to the lack of my vocabulary.

We had a lot of things and lessons planned out this week and it all just kind of went wack and fell through, unfortunately.  So Tuesday we didn’t have any lessons, but we went and set up our iPads that day with the assistants.  It was cool to get them and I am sure that they will help us a lot to be able to share messages with people and help us bring people unto Christ.
